  • Taste and knowledge: a journey inside the world of pre-Columbian food

A journey through the world of pre-Columbian food starting from the early domestication processes in the Andes. It explores the traces present in small fragments and representations in ceramic and lithic pieces used as tableware six thousand years ago by the Valdivia Culture (4000-1500 B.C.). Together with scientific, historical and audiovisual documents, they will allow us to approach the extraordinary world of pre-Columbian food.

  • Time of Corn

    July – September
The third time of the temporary exhibition ‘Sabor y Saber: un viaje al interior de la alimentación precolombina’ (Taste and Knowledge: a journey into pre-Columbian food), ‘Tiempo de maíz’ (Time of corn).

Corn was domesticated approximately nine thousand years ago in Mesoamerica, and cultivated and consumed in Ecuador for seven thousand years. Since pre-Hispanic times it has been an essential element in the food and culture of Andean societies. From the 16th century onwards, its use and value transcended from America to the world and today it is part of the global diet.
